What it is

The MONO Dust Catch is the black version of Tombow’s MONO eraser, made so the shavings cling to the eraser instead of ending up all over the page and, eventually, the floor. You erase, the crumbs gather on the eraser, you pinch them off.

Why it made the list: the “crumbs that stay together” eraser is a very Japanese thing. Hinodewashi put the first one on sale in 1986, and it’s been a normal category in Japanese shops ever since — the explanation you usually hear here is that homes were switching from tatami to wooden floors around then, and eraser dust that used to vanish into the mats suddenly ended up on the soles of your feet. Outside Japan it’s still less common. Tombow’s own entry arrived in late 2011: the erasing feel of the regular MONO, in a black body that reviewers like because pencil dirt doesn’t show.

One honest note from the Japanese reviews: the body is a little softer than the plain MONO, and if you erase a patch and walk away without gathering the crumbs, you haven’t gained much.

Who should skip it: if your eraser lives in a bag and you rub out a line now and then, the plain MONO does the job for less fuss. This one earns its place on a desk where you erase a lot — students, people who sketch, anyone who still does their sums on paper.

If you’re ordering from abroad, the good part is that you get something your local shop may well not stock — an eraser whose crumbs stay on the eraser — from the maker of Japan’s standard eraser, at a price that barely registers on top of a bigger Rakuten order. It weighs almost nothing, so adding it to a parcel that’s going anyway costs next to nothing.

The not-so-good: it isn’t worth a forwarding fee on its own, so plan it as an add-on. The body is a little softer than the plain MONO, and a few Japanese reviewers say the standard one is the better buy if you don’t gather the crumbs as you go. And crumbs do still form; they just stay where you can pinch them off.

Questions people ask

What's actually different from the regular MONO?

Tombow adds what it calls a tack polymer to the mix, so the shavings stick to each other and to the eraser body instead of spreading out. The feel when you erase is the same. Oh, and it's black instead of white, which Tombow chose so any crumbs that do come loose are easy to spot on the page.

Does it really keep the shavings together?

For everyday erasing, yes — Japanese reviewers and a Japanese comparison test both say the crumbs stay attached to the eraser and you just pinch them off. One reviewer's caveat: if you don't collect the crumbs with the eraser as you go, the plain MONO is the better buy.
